| Keith Greenfield was one of the first physiotherapists in the UK to undertake a specialist role as clinical assistant to a consultant surgeon. This model is now widely used in the NHS. He manages the Spinal Assessment Clinic in the Neurosurgery Department at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, which has an international reputation in the field of spinal surgery. The department provides a regional specialist service for diagnosis and treatment of spinal problems. Many patients referred to Frenchay suffer from intervertebral disc prolapse, spinal stenosis or other degenerative spinal diseases, which can produce disabling and long lasting pain. The department published guidelines for referral and care of patients with back pain and related problems as long ago as 1994, which remain the framework by which, many general practitioners manage their patients, and these guidelines were adopted widely outside of this area. Keith’s clinical interests involve improving access to services for patients, and the development of enhanced diagnostic and treatment services for spinal pain. Such services are being developed in partnership with staff from other medical and healthcare specialities, including radiologists, anaesthetists specialising in pain management, physiotherapists and psychologists, at Frenchay Hospital. His research interests are chiefly the outcomes of surgical and conservative treatments for intervertebral disc disease, and the role of rehabilitation and preventative treatment for spinal conditions. He has presented clinical and research papers at international conferences and lectures on diagnosis, investigation and management of spinal problems, participating in educational programmes for doctors and physiotherapists. In addition to NHS duties, Keith holds a clinic at the Chesterfield (Nuffield) Hospital in Clifton, Bristol, where other members of the team comprise neurosurgeons and a pain consultant, all with a specific interest in treatment of spinal pain. | Test | |||||
